Hot Buttered Rum

‘Tis the season to serve Hot Buttered Rum. The perfect cocktail to serve on a snowy winter evening after skiing and sledding. Most recipes for Hot Buttered Rum will make more than one serving because this is such a social drink, made for sharing with your snow bunny friends.

Hot Buttered Rum has long been a treasured winter sipper. In the movie White Christmas, Bob Wallace, played by Bing Crosby, reflects on the winter season in Vermont. Included in his list is “snow-covered slopes, skiing…hot buttered rum, light on the butter!

Hot Buttered Rum

Ingredients
  

  • 6 ounces dark rum
  • 3 cups hot water
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 vanilla bean pod, scraped out, pod reserved for another use
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons tightly packed dark brown sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
  • pinch ground mace
  • pinch ground nutmeg

Instructions
 

  • For the cocktail: Stir together rum and water. Place 1 tablespoon vanilla bean butter in each of 4 warmed mugs. Pour rum into mugs. Stir and serve.
  • For the vanilla bean butter: In a bowl, mix together the butter, vanilla bean paste, dark brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, mace and nutmeg.
